The Union Finance Ministry, on 18 September, gave green signal to the Ministry of Minority Affairs to develop the National Waqf Corporation with a starting fund of Rs. 500 Crore. The proposal will be sent to the Government for Cabinet nod soon. The decision was necessitated due to increasing encroachment of Waqf properties. As per the data available with the Ministry of Minority Affairs, 1,053 and 18,388 properties of Waqf Board are under adverse possession of government and individuals respectively. Pertaining to note here is that only 10 per cent of the total Waqf properties are registered with the Board and the data is based on registered properties only. No accurate report on remaining 90 per cent is available. According to the sources of the Ministry, Waqf Board has properties worth Rs 1.2 Crore in pan-India, lying waste and under constant threat of encroachment.
