The government of Gujarat has recently asked the Union Government to dismiss the suspended officer, Sanjiv Bhatt, from the Indian Police Service. Bhatt, who was suspended two years ago after alleging that Modi had told the police not to take any action against any Hindu rioters during 2002 Gujarat riots, is a 1988-batch IPS officer. Since then the Modi government has charged the IPS officer with many cases. And when Bhatt’s wife, Shweta, decided to contest last election against Modi, it added fuel to the fire.
Bhatt, however, cannot be sacked as the Indian Civil Services Rules state that an IPS officer can be dismissed directly only for sedition charges. In all other cases, no action can be taken against him until a proper enquiry is over.
