Saudi Arabia has released details of a coalition airstrike on Yemen’s southern city of Mukalla, an operation that has deepened tensions with the UAE and led Abu Dhabi to announce withdrawal of its forces from Yemen.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al Maliki said the strike targeted two ships entering the port. He said inspections showed more than 80 vehicles and containers carrying weapons and ammunition. He added that vehicles, containers, and Emirati personnel were transferred to the al Rayyan base without Saudi coordination. Al Maliki said coalition forces followed established rules of engagement during the operation.
The UAE soon announced the end of its remaining mission in Yemen, describing it as counterterrorism operations. The decision followed a demand from Yemen’s internationally recognised government for Emirati forces to leave within 24 hours, a call supported by Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh accused Abu Dhabi of backing the separatist Southern Transitional Council, which has launched an offensive against government forces this month. The STC seeks an independent southern Yemen and has seized control of wide areas, including Hadramout and Mahara provinces. Saudi Arabia said pressure placed on the STC to advance in these regions posed a threat to its national security.
Saudi officials described national security as a red line and warned of firm steps against perceived threats.
Qatar urged restraint within the GCC.
