After decades of banning, Saudi women may finally be able to take the driver’s seat. There is, reportedly, a decision to move on this by the Royal Court. Officials affirmed that the landmark decision and plan to issue a decree allowing women drivers will see the light by the end of the year. The move comes amid mounting pressures from women activists supported by western media and rights groups. Religious scholars have long voiced fears that allowing women to drive would lead to western-style freedoms and an erosion of traditional values. Initially these scholars resisted vehemently the idea but their resistance slowly lost its force and diminished into a form of consent. Now the thinking is that one can be against the driving by women but one does not have the right to prevent others from being behind the wheels!
