Supreme Court on July 30 rejecting Modi government’s plea, extended time for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by former CBI director R.K. Raghavan to submit its report on the Gujarat riots cases by December 31. The state government had opposed extension to the SIT, saying that it was not functioning in conformity with the Supreme Court order of April 27, when it was constituted. The development came when the SIT submitted two reports before the apex bench of Justices D.K. Jain, P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam relating to the nine trials outside the state which were sought by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Citizens for Justice and Peace.

The other report related to the complaint filed by Zakia Jaffery, wife of former MP Ehsan Jaferry, seeking probe against Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his other cabinet ministers behind the genocide in which Ehsan Jafery along with several other Muslims was killed in the Gulbarga Society. Submitting the preliminary reports, the SIT had sought for more time from the Apex Court examining the matter since it involved reading of voluminous documents.
