The Supreme Court on August 3 directed the Government of Gujarat to pay adequate compensation to the family of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was killed in a fake encounter along with his wife Kausar Bi, by the Gujarat police in November 2007. A bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Aftab Alam however refrained from fixing the amount of compensation which it left to be decided by the state government before the next hearing in the case on August 11.
The Apex Court indicated that it would also hand over further investigation into the staged killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his friend Tulsiram Prajapati by the state police to the Special Investigation Penal headed by former CBI director RK Raghavan. Petitioner Rubbabuddin Sheikh, brother of the deceased, had been demanding a CBI inquiry as he was not satisfied with the investigation carried out by the Gujarat police.
