The Supreme Court has granted bail to Dr. Binayak Sen, Vice President of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, who had been in detention since May 2007 under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his alleged association with the Naxalites movement in Chhattisgarh. Even as Senior Counsel Shanti Bhushan, appearing for Dr. Sen, was about to make his submission, a vacation Bench consisting of Justices Markanday Katju and Deepak Verma ordered Dr. Sen release on bail on his furnishing a personal bond to the satisfaction of the trial court. The Bench ignored the plea of Senior Counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Chhattisgarh government, opposing bail on the ground that trial was about to be completed.
