Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati has been pulled up by the Supreme Court for her controversial move to instal her statues across the State with more than 1,200 crore of public money. Taking note of the serious allegations that the public funds meant for development have been misused, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the State government and Mayawati. “Funds meant for people’s development should not be diverted,” noted the Vacation Bench Justices Dalveer Bhandari and AK Ganguly before issuing notices to Mayawati, the State Governement and Election Commissin seeking their response within four weeks. The Apex Court passed the order on a PIL filed by two practising Advocates of the Supreme Court, who challenged the Chief Minister’s “self-glorification campaign” by installing her own stautes along with those of her mentor Kanshi Ram and her party symbol elephant – all at the cost of public money.
