The Supreme Court’s verdict to set aside the release of 11 life convicts in Bilkis Bano case has restored the faith of the common man in the judiciary. It is upsetting, however, to see how the Gujarat government had manipulated the case to favour the convicts of rape and murder to reap electoral gains.
Justice has prevailed ultimately because of the spirited fight made by Bilkis Bano and the undaunted support extended to her by many Good Samaritans like the expelled Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra, Subhashini Ali, Prof. Roop Rekha Varma and a battery of advocates like Kapil Sibal, Vrinda Grover and Abhishek Singhvi.
The entire episode explains as to why a vast majority of rapes go unreported in India, since the conviction rate is abysmal in courts of law.

Send the convicts in Bilkis Bano to jail in a non-BJP state
Justice was done to Bilkis Bano after 21 years. Slamming the Gujarat government’s abuse of powers, the Supreme Court cancelled the release of Bilkis Bano’s rapists and murderers of her family members. Justice has been done at the Apex Court with the order of remission of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case being quashed and all being ordered back to jail.
Judiciary is the guardian of the rule of law and the central pillar of a democratic state. The law needs to be respected, otherwise it would remain a mockery of our legal system. It is better that all the rapists should be sent to jail in a non-BJP state.

Manipur Still Burning
As we enter 2024, one point of concern for every Indian is the situation in Manipur where more than a hundred people have died in mindless violence over the past several months. How can we sit back and relax as long as our brethren in this little North Eastern State are plagued by fear, insecurity and the threat of violence breaking out at any moment?
Does the government at the Centre or in the State have no inkling of how to solve the unrest? Manipur will continue to trouble our national conscience as long as those in power are unable to bring the warring sides to the table and achieve an amicable solution.

Stop the Carnage
Despite thousands of innocent civilians dying in the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, hardly anything has been done by world powers to stop the carnage and end human suffering.
In any war, civilians, particularly kids are spared the hardship but that does not seem to have happened in this conflict with the bombings continuing relentlessly and hospitals and schools being targeted.
Has the spark of humanism died in all of us? Why is the war being allowed to continue though more than considerable time has elapsed since it started? Only intense pressure from people across the world will help to end this catastrophe staring at us.
