Anas ibn Malik relates that the Messenger of Allah said: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.”

(Ibn Mājah)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺteaches us to “Acquire knowledge and impart it to the people.” (Tirmidhi)Seeking knowledge for one’s own sake is not enough; it becomes mandatory for a seekerof knowledge to impart it to others. Thus, Islam has raised a movement for education.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches:“A father gives his child nothing better than a good education.” (Tirmidhi) Generally people give their children wealth, empires, assets. But, in Islamic scheme of things, it is a good education that is the best gift a father can provide for his children. This emphasis on education is a wake-up call for those who deny children, especially girls, the right to education.

Abu Darda reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Verily, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge. The inhabitants of the heavens and earth, even the fish in the depths of the water, seek forgiveness for the scholar. The virtue of the scholar over the worshipper is like the superiority of the moon over the stars. The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. They do not leave behind gold or silver coins, but rather they leave behind knowledge. Whoever has taken hold of it has been given an abundant share.” (AbīDāwūd)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺhas also warned that “Knowledge from which no benefit is derived is like a treasure out of which nothing is spent in the cause of God.” (Tirmidhi)
