The International Conference of the Presidents of the Supreme Courts that concluded in Abu Dhabi focused on the justice delivery and challenges of the 21st century and Islamic Shari’ah as a legal system coexisting with other legal systems around the world. The conference also discussed the Shari’ah as a universal legal system juxtaposed with other legal systems of the world. The conference had provided an occasion for chief justices and experts representing various legal systems to exchange views and discuss issues of concern to the legal experts around the world. This conference was the first international judicial meeting in which the Shariah was discussed as a legal and judicial system, and not only as a jurisprudential heritage. The conference also discussed the various challenges of the 21st century pertaining to the state’s legal authority, its position regarding human rights and the environment, and the ensuing repercussions for the development of the law and the administration of justice.
