Fishermen in Quriyat in Muscat had a field day when they netted an 18-foot long, 500-kilogram shark that reportedly fetched them a fortune at a rare auction the same day. Abdullah, a fisherman, who found a gigantic creature struggling to wriggle out of his net, tried to drag the catch back to the shore on his own, but failed. He sailed back and sought the support of 30 other fishermen. They ventured out into the sea and found the catch, only to realise that it was not an ordinary one; Abdullah had, in fact, bumped into a huge shark. “The news spread like wild fire in and around Quriyat, drawing huge crowds, including some prospective buyers,” said Abdullah. He auctioned his prized possession and got RO700. According to a fisherman who has been in the trade for several years, sharks never come close to shore. “This shark must have stayed close to shore, following its prey, when it got entangled in Abdullah’s fishing net,” he said.
