Taking a cue from their elders, a group of children from Permude, Tenka Yekkaru, Kuthethur and Delanthabettu staged a demonstration against the Mangalore Special Economic Zone project at Mangalore on April 19. The children urged the Dakshina Kannada District Administration to de-notify the 2,035 acre of land proposed to be acquired by Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board for the second phase of the project. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, the children said their elders were a worried lot ever since the KIADB issued notices of land acquisition for the second phase of the project. The children were protesting under the banner, Junior Associate Circle, a wing of Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO). The organisation, in its memorandum, urged not to go ahead with land acquisition. K. Shaukath Ali, president of local unit of SIO and Abdul Kabeer, its secretary, were present.
