Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Good health is essential for the overall development of a person. The progress of the family, society and the country depends on the healthy development of the people of that society and the environment there. As said in the proverb, “A healthy mind in a healthy body”, this balance between the mental and physical health of a person is very important. Perfect health can only come from personal, social and moral consciousness and responsibility. A healthy lifestyle keeps a person fit, energetic and healthy.

The National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5; 2019-2020) reported stunting among children less than 5 years of age in 11 out of 17 states. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), obesity has nearly tripled worldwide since 1975. According to the Indian Journal of Community Medicine (Indian Journal of Community Medicine), 135 million people are obese in India. Furthermore, the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) says that by 2030, 27.8 percent of obesity worldwide will be seen in Indians. Heartattacks are now common in the young generation as well. Alcohol consumption, drug addiction, poor diet, obesity, blood pressure, lack of physical activities, etc. are said to be the reasons for this. Reports say that there is one diabetic or hypertensive patient in each household.

The annual survey report of EduSports said that the physical fitness of school students who stay away from sports activities, exercise and physical labour is declining, and there is a risk of the next generation of the country becoming physically disabled. The organisation surveyed the health and physical fitness of 77,669 students aged between 7 to 17 years from 176 schools in 68 cities across 17 states of the country. Although the awareness about physical fitness has increased, the physical health of school students has not improved. The survey report said that the physical density index of the students is very low.

The primary responsibility for maintaining a person’s health lies with him as an individual. The lifestyle, diet, etc. that we adopt affects our physical and mental health. Health is a gift from God. We need to realise the cost of healthcare without neglecting it. The body, once depleted, must work hard to get back to its former state. Small diseases are enough to endanger our lives like small termites eat big books.

A person should become physically and mentally strong as a strong mind resides in a strong body. Therefore, in order to provide the necessary awareness and training to the youth for physical and mental development, Solidarity Youth Movement has decided to conduct a state-wide campaign theme “Better Health Better Life” from February 5 to 25, 2023. As a part of this campaign, health awareness meetings, JumaKhutba (Friday Sermons), lectures, street plays, sports, marathon, street drama, athletics and award programmes will be held for youth who have achieved in health and sports. Efforts will also be put into the establishment of Physical Training Centres (Sports and Wellness Centre).
