Somalia’s National Security Minister Abdikarim Hussein Guled resigned on 24 May, only hours after 27 people were killed in an attack on the parliament headquarters in the capital Mogadishu. Guled took over the security portfolio in his restive country only 20 months ago, but he was under immense pressure from parliament during recent months, having been accused of failing to bring order to the streets of Somalia. He told the government’s radio that he decided to step down. At least 27 people, including several Somali soldiers, were killed on Saturday in an attack on the parliament building in Mogadishu.
