Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on 16 February, assured AMU fraternity to help them at every stage in the way of granting minority status to the Aligarh Muslim University. “I know the issue of minority status of AMU is pending in the Supreme Court. I want to assure you I would do my best to ensure autonomy and historical character of this eminent university,” Sonia said addressing the 60th convocation of the university via audio conferencing as she could not attend the same due to inclement weather. She further added, “The [Muslim] community has given towering leaders to the country, who have played a key role in the freedom struggle. AMU itself is linked to many famous and historical personalities.”
