The Centre has decided to issue special passports to Haj pilgrims who do not possess it in view of the Saudi Arabian government’s new order making the documents mandatory. Addressing a press conference on August 10 after a meeting of passport officers of southern states, Goa and Maharashtra, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said only special passports were needed earlier for the pilgrimage. Only 600 applications had been received so far at the special counters at passport offices. Prospective pilgrims should contact the respective state Haj Committees and get their passports, Dr. Tharoor said.
