A high-level Central team is in Kashmir to assess the arrangements ahead of the opening of the weekly Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service. The service will begin after August 21. At present, the bus operates fortnightly and only 30 passengers from both sides are allowed to travel. At a recent high-level meeting, India and Pakistan had agreed to increase the frequency of the bus service running between two parts of Kashmir. Headed by Joint Secretary (Home) Sakanandan, the team visited Kaman post and Salamabad on the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri and also inspected the work on the truck terminal that will be used as a transit point once the truck service between Srinagar-Muzaffarabad starts. The team also met officials of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in Uri and told them to speed up the process of upgradation of national highway from Uri to Kaman. “Arrangements are being made to make road feasible for the truck service,” a BRO spokesman said. Since the opening of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in 2005, only 2700 persons from both parts of Kashmir have managed to cross the LoC in the bus called Carvan Aman (peace bus). Around 15,000 people have already submitted their documents with the Regional Passport Officer for the special permits.
