Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice has pushed for the statutory status for the Law Commission. The Chairperson of Committee, E M S Natchiappan asserted, “We want the Commission to have a sanctity which is on the lines of a parliamentary standing committee. Its report should necessarily evoke a response from the executive, as is the case with a standing committee.” This stance of the Parliamentary Committee came after the revelations that a huge number of Law Commission reports are gathering dust. The Law Commission, which is headed by Justice A R Lakshmanan, former Supreme Court judge, has as of now submitted over 215 reports; out of these 57 are still to be implemented.
