Suspended staff members of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, have recently opened a front against its Vice Chancellor, Najeeb Jung, and alleged that the VC had turned dictator. The suspended teachers under the banner of Jamia Employees Forum said the Executive Council of the university lacked independent powers as most of its members have been appointed on ad hoc basis which, according to them, has added more power to the VC. The forum has sought the intervention of HRD Ministry over the suspension of teachers.
As many as 29 people including staff from teaching, non-teaching and students have been either suspended or rusticated in the 3-year tenure of the VC while 16 others have resigned in protest. Among those who resigned is Anwar Alam who was the director of West Asian Studies. Anwar was appointed in Jamia through a special request to join the university. He was earlier an Associate Professor of International Studies at JawaharLal Nehru University, New Delhi.
