Pakistan rejected the US criticism at Shari’ah regulations in Swat. The US had called the Swat development as “less democracy and less human rights.” Foreign Office spokesman of Pakistan Abdul Basit said, “We are a democratic country and we attach importance to democracy and human rights and will not compromise on these issues.” He referred to Nizam Adl as a justice system and local arrangement. The spokesman also said the system would bring about peace and prosperity and enhance development in the region.
Sufi Muhammad, the chief of banned Tehrik Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi also angrily reacted to the US criticism at his news conference and said that the “non-Muslims have always opposed Islamic laws.” The Afghan Government has also come up with a similar criticism at ‘Nizam-e-Adl’ regulations and the spokesman for President Karzai warned that Pakistan’s deal with the Taliban will have “dire consequences” for the region and could harm ties between the two neighbours. Criticism by Karzai’s spokesman at the Pakistan’s peace deal has surprised many as the Afghan President has himself called for talks with the Taliban since long ago.
