A number of Dalit students were beaten up by some “upper caste” people allegedly for trying to offer prayer to Ganesha at a government-run school in Chakoda-Gogua village under Kendrapara district of Odisha on 9 September. The incident took place when some students from “lower caste” went to offer prayer to the deity in the manner their fellow classmates were doing. But they were detained on the entrance gate, beaten up and left with a warning not to dare repeating their act in future. “Some teachers and guardians of the upper caste students prevented us from worshipping the deity in the school and used abusive language when we tried to offer prayer with other school children,” alleged a victim.
