Thai Airways International has received permission to use the Halal mark for food prepared by its catering facilities at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The facilities passed an audit from the Institute for Halal Food Standard of Thailand (Halal Thai) last month for conforming to dietary requirements under Islamic law at all stages of the supply and preparation chain. Pismai Chandrubeksa, managing director for catering services at THAI, said demand for Halal food had grown to the point where it became necessary to set up a Halal kitchen as a separate unit from the regular kitchen. THAI flies daily to numerous cities in countries with large Islamic populations, such as the UAE, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Oman, Bangladesh, Brunei and Indian destinations. In addition to demand from Muslim passengers, THAI also provides meals for 10 airlines that are national carriers of Islamic-majority countries. Total demand is 5,000 Halal meals per day.
