قالالنبيﷺ

خَيْرُالنَّاسِقَرْنِي،ثُمَّالَّذِينَيَلُونَهُمْ،ثُمَّالَّذِينَيَلُونَهُمْ،ثُمَّيَجِيءُمِنْبَعْدِهِمْقَوْمٌتَسْبِقُشَهَادَتُهُمْأَيْمَانَهُمْوَأَيْمَانُهُمْشَهَادَتَهُمْ

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best people are those of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. After them will come people whose witness will precede their oaths and whose oaths will precede their witness.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 6428]

Throughout history we have witnessed many empires and kingdoms, but there was only one generation that transformed the world’s definition of loyalty. They moved from temporary obedience driven by fear or pressure to embracing timeless devotion. This was the generation of the Sahabah رضياللهعنهمأجمعين, the companions, ”the Best Generation” who did not just study Islam but lived it wholeheartedly.

When the world around them, particularly the Arabian Peninsula, measured strength through status and the sword, the companions changed this narrative. They shifted their worth from social status to their relationship with the Creator.

Allah says: “Remember Allah’s favour upon you when you were enemies and He united your hearts, so by His grace you became brothers.” [Al-Qur’an, Surah Aal-e-Imran: 103]

This is what true transformation means. Men who once would fight for decades over a stolen camel were now sharing their homes, their shops, and their lives. Their love was not merely emotional; it was obedience driven. They moulded themselves according to what Allah commanded and what the Prophet ﷺ exemplified.

Narrated by the father of Hazrat Sa’d: “When the emigrants arrived in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ established brotherhood between Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf and Sa’d ibn Ar-Rabi. Sa’d offered to share half of his wealth and even divorce one of his wives so that Abdur-Rahman could marry her after her ‘iddah. Abdur-Rahman politely declined and only asked to be shown the market. He began trading and soon earned a profit.” [Sahih Bukhari 3780]

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, the closest companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, once gave all his wealth in charity during a war. When asked what he had left for his family, he replied beautifully that he had left Allah and His Messenger for them. SubhanAllah.

This is not just about money; it is about faith, sacrifice, and trust in Allah’s provision. The hearts of the Sahabah رضياللهعنهمأجمعين were so attached to Allah that worldly possessions meant nothing to them if Allah and His Messenger were pleased.

Today we see the modern generation following the latest trends and admiring heroes whose greatest achievements revolve around luxury and excess. They are taught to measure success by brands or by the number of followers on social media.

But The Best Generation was guided by a different standard. Their luxury was the peace of a clean heart devoted solely to Allah and adherence to the timeless Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. They did not seek to be known by the world or to stand in the spotlight. They sought to be known by the heavens.

The best generation was not a group of angels; they were human beings. Yet revelation shaped their character and transformed their lives. Their example shows us that when love for the Divine becomes the priority, the trends of the world become nothing more than a hollow echo.
