Prime Minister of Tanzania Edward Lowassa has said that the government does not plan to table a bill on Kadhi Court in the forthcoming parliamentary session.
Addressing a public rally, Mr Lowassa said that the matter is currently being looked into by the Law Reform Commission which would then submit its recommendations to the government. He said the recommendations would further be discussed by other stakeholders before the final decision is made.
His reaction came just a day after the Full Salvation Church and its Rev. Christopher Mtikila petitioned the High Court in Dar es Salaam to challenge the establishment of Kadhi Court for Muslims in Tanzania. They are asking the court to declare unconstitutional the involvement in any way whatsoever of the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Law Reform Commission and the Parliament on issues involving the Kadhi Court. The requests by the petitioners came few days after the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (Bakwata) renewed its appeal for establishment of Kadhi Court on Tanzania Mainland.
