I was very sad to learn from your current issue (Radiance, 19-25 September 2010) of the demise of Dr Fathi Osman in Montrose, California, USA on 11 September, 2010. I knew Dr Osman personally and I admired his creative interpretation of Islam and his refusal to come to term with the autocratic regime in the Muslim World. In the 80’s he edited Arabia Monthly, the Islamic World Review, from London and subsequently the Minaret from Los Anglos which I read.

He was indeed one of the greatest Islamic thinkers of our age. Author of more than 50 books in Arabic and English on various aspects of Islam and the Quran, apart from writing many occasional papers, I wish some organisation will undertake to edit the vast corpus of his creative output and compile it for the benefit of future generations.

On the behalf of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat and on my own behalf I pay tribute to his memory, offer through you my heartfelt condolences to his wife and daughter and to his numerous students, colleagues and admirers all over the world. We pray to Allah for his Maghferat.
