Prophet Muhammad ﷺsaid: “By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.’’ It was asked, “Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?’’ He said, “One whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
Islam advises mankind to treat neighbours in a good and kind way. Neighbourhood is one of the blessings of Allah. Here we can see the emphasis the Prophet Muhammad ﷺhas laid on upholding the rights of neighbours. He said, ‘By Allah, he is not a believer!’ three times. When the Companions present there asked who that unfortunate personis, he said, ‘one whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil.’ That is, we should not cause any inconvenience to neighbours.
In another hadith the Prophet ﷺ said: “Jibril kept recommending me to treat my neighbour well until I thought that he would tell me to make him one of my heirs.”(Bukhari: 6014)
To maintain the peaceful environment in the society, we need to take care of our neighbours. In a hadith it is beautifully stated with an example, that how to care and behave with neighbours. Abu Dharr, May Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Prophetﷺ commanded me thus, “O Abu Dharr! Whenever you prepare a broth, put plenty of water in it, and give some of it to your neighbours.”(Muslim)
In yet another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said, “He is not a believer who eats his fill whilst his neighbour beside him goes hungry.”(Bukhari)
