August 23, 2023 would be always remembered as a red-letter day in the history of India. This is the day on which we achieved success in soft-landing of our lander with a rover, on the reverse side of the moon, near its south pole. Now we are the fourth proud member of the elite Space Club with Russia, America and China. This has opened the doors of further achievements in space exploration.

This success is due to the vast knowledge, strenuous efforts and decades long meticulous planning of the ISRO team. They deserve our congratulations, encouragement and prayers for further progress in space exploration. It is not only a matter of pride but also of thanksgiving to Almighty God who enabled our still progressing country to accomplish this feat.

Subsequent reports indicate that the rover has been activated and it is busy with further explorations and data collection on the surface of the moon. We hope these activities will further improve our knowledge about our nearest neighbour and in near future we would be able to send an Indian to the moon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement resonates with our thoughts that this success was not India’s alone but it belongs to the entire humanity. He also reconfirmed India’s commitment to one earth, one human family and one future for humanity. It is very appropriate that on the accomplishment of this singular achievement we are stressing our commitment to universal human values and human-centric approach to all scientific exploration.

The world has tremendously suffered because of narrowminded nationalism and parochial and selfish policies. In India also we have voices which speak about India-specific DNA, while the truth is that all human beings are one family and progeny of one man and woman. This can be understood if we believe in One God and His divine teachings. The world has to understand it and we in India require it in greater measure that all knowledge, scientific discoveries and inventions are the common heritage of the whole humanity. Because of the continuous efforts of the last ten to fifteen thousand years we could reach the present stage of civilization. It may be easier to talk about colonising the moon. But it would be the greater success if we love all people, do justice to all fellow citizens and provide minimum standard of life which may ensure dignity to all citizens. Therefore, we should see that our progress should not be lopsided.

The moon is the satellite of our earth. Let’s think about our solar system, then our galaxy which has about 250 billion solar systems. Knowledge about the vast and unlimited universe is no doubt very important. It gives us the knowledge of greatness of God, who is our Lord and Creator of the universe. He has given us the duty to lead a morally good life. Therefore, our greater efforts should be directed towards improving and quality of life both materially and more importantly morally. Let’s use knowledge and reasons for the welfare of all Indian citizens. We can set an example to the whole world by creating an India which is an epitome of equality, prosperity and morality. Lastly, the moon is a stop, not the destination. Destination is welfare of humanity and eternal success in the everlasting life of hereafter.
