It is not easy to follow the news of a man who is now over 80 years old, suffers from health problems, and spends his days behind bars under conditions that numerous reports say do not adequately take into account his medical and humanitarian needs. Even more difficult than following these developments is the attempt to reduce his story to nothing more than a legal case, when in reality it concerns a figure who played a prominent role in the modern history of Tunisia, regardless of the extent to which one agrees or disagrees with him.
The man in question is Rached Ghannouchi, the former Speaker of the Tunisian Parliament and leader of the Ennahda Movement, one of Tunisia’s largest and most deeply rooted political movements. He is also regarded as one of the leading theorists of reformist political thought, striving to reconcile Islamic principles with democracy, political pluralism, and the peaceful transfer of power.
Ghannouchi spent decades in exile, moving from one capital to another far from his homeland. Yet he never abandoned his convictions. Following what became known as the Jasmine Revolution, he returned to Tunisia to participate in building a new political experience for his country, with all its successes and failures. Today, however, he faces another ordeal – life in prison under conditions made increasingly harsh by his advanced age and deteriorating health.
Political disagreement should never overshadow humanitarian values. Respect for human dignity, ensuring adequate healthcare for detainees, and preventing punishment from becoming an instrument of unnecessary suffering are principles that transcend political affiliations and ideologies. They are also benchmarks by which a state’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law is measured.
From another perspective, if there is a lesson to be drawn from this difficult situation, it is that Ghannouchi’s experience demonstrates that politics is never a path with guaranteed outcomes. Those who choose to speak out for what they believe to be right have no assurance of safety or victory. Governments change, political fortunes shift, but convictions remain as a lasting testament to those who hold them – whether history ultimately judges them favourably or not.
The patience that Ghannouchi displays today is not merely patience in the face of illness or imprisonment. It is the continuation of a long journey of bearing the consequences of his political choices. A man who spent many years in exile, returned to help govern his country, and then found himself once again behind bars understands better than most that genuine political engagement is not a road to easy rewards. Rather, it is a sphere where sacrifice and responsibility are inseparably intertwined.
Analysts may differ in their assessment of Ghannouchi, his movement, his positions, and his political decisions. Such disagreement is entirely legitimate. Yet every individual, regardless of their views, has the right to be treated with dignity and to have their fundamental rights protected, free from the impulses of vindictiveness or revenge.
History teaches us that the true measure of individuals is revealed more clearly in times of hardship than in times of power. The value of one’s principles is not reflected in immediate gains but in the price one is willing to pay in defending them. Politics offers no guarantees, but a clear conscience, steadfastness, and the ability to endure adversity remain among the greatest legacies a person can leave behind. (Rached Ghannouchi’s international standing was also reflected in his recognition beyond the Arab world. In 2016, he received the Jamnalal Bajaj Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India, in recognition of his role in encouraging peaceful democratic transition, dialogue, and the non-violent transfer of power during Tunisia’s post-revolution period. Ghannouchi donated the entire award amount to the Tunisian Red Crescent as a charitable contribution. Years later, however, that very donation became the subject of legal controversy in Tunisia, ultimately forming part of the judicial proceedings that resulted in one of the prison sentences handed down against him – a development that has sparked debate among supporters and critics alike.)
