U.P. is in the news and this time for the wrong reason of the growing numbers of fake encounters. In the past three years, U.P. Police has allegedly killed 120 people in fake encounters. The first four months of the year 2011 have witnessed six deaths. Families of the deceased are knocking at the doors of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for justice. According to government sources, the NHRC found 369 cases of fake killings in the year 2008-09, and in 90 cases Police’s actions were found suspicious. NHRC has asked for compensation for the families of the deceased. Manipur follows U. P. and ranks second in the list of fake encounters.
