The undue attention given to cricket might not keep the public attention from ‘real politic’ for long. By beating another team the nation doesn’t improve its governance; in fact an adverse effect is possible. First, the persistent lack of sporting spirit might fuel the traumatic nationalism. Secondly, minorities in both nations are likely to be affected in the aftermath of jingoistic play. The subcontinent must realise that cricket is only going to multiply its worries.
