To bring awareness among the masses, the United Milli Forum (UMF) organised a discussion on Social Security and Right to Food on 22nd September. Raj Baldev, District Development Commissioner (DDC), was the chief guest . He assured the gathering that, he will not let anybody die out of hunger in his district. He asked the gathering to bring the irregularities to his knowledge so that he may act accordingly. Presiding over the discussion, Dr. Hassan Raza, Convener of the UMF, emphasised the awareness and struggle to attain human dignity and ensure social security. Considering food a fundamental right, Dr. Raza appealed the gathering to take pledge to work towards bringing justice and equity in the society. Earlier, Balram ji, State advisor to the Commissioner of the Supreme Court in Right to Food Case, stressed that that it was unfortunate if somebody dies out of hunger. Government should act before it is too late. Gurjit Singh of MNREGA Watch pointed that situation in Jharkhand has been worsening due to drought. 50 people have lost their lives. He urged the participants to work towards building a sensitive and aware society. Other speakers included Block Development Officer (BDO) of Bermo block, Radheshayam Prasad. Following the death of 18 years old girl, Samrum Khatoon’s of Miyantand Toli in Kashijhariya Panchayat of Bokaro district, a fact finding team of United Milli Forum (UMF) visited the village. The team was led by Afzal Anees, Co-convener of UMF and comprised of Md. Naushad Akhter and Md. Imran Hawari. Samrun Khatoon lost her life of out of hunger on26th September. Ironically, her death came barely four days after the assurance that, no one will die out of hunger in his district by District Development Commissioner (DDC) of Bokaro, Baldev Raj in a public meeting organized by UMF. Samrun was the third child of her parents. Her father is mentally challenged and mother is physically weak.
