That the ATS chief Hemant Karkare, who was about to expose the ‘Hindutva terror link’ in a matter of days, had to die in the attack did raise many an eyebrow. The investigation agencies shall leave no stone unturned to unravel whether there was more to it than meets the eye. A vast majority of Muslims in India are shocked and ashamed of the despicable acts committed by a few scallywags allegedly belonging to their community. But it needs to be understood that secularism is an important ingredient of our pluralist society and peace and prosperity of the whole nation is possible if all sections of people are brought into the national mainstream. How the secular character of our great nation will remain protected depends upon the way the government is going to react henceforth. There are a few who argue that our country should join the bandwagon of America’s ‘war on terror’ and take lessons from Israel. Terrorism took the worst turn in Pakistan only after Musharraf followed the prescriptions of George Bush. Any feeling of victimisation would drive the vulnerable section in Muslims to fall prey to the vicious propaganda of radical elements.
