Muslim advocates in Uttar Pradesh have decided to constitute state and district level legal committees to counter the decision of various bar associations of not taking up terror-related cases. With this move the possibility of a split in the bar associations cannot be ruled out.
According to a report, large numbers of advocates gathered under the banner of Ulama-led Movement Against Terrorism (MAT) to chalk out an action plan. Some bar associations had announced that they would not take up the cases of the accused allegedly involved in terror acts in the state. The Muslim advocates had then strongly contested the decision. Inaugurating the meet Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli called upon the legal Muslim fraternity to protect the rights of the “innocent” who were being harassed in the name of terrorism.
