Our Masajid should first be upgraded to function as broad-based social and community centres instead of being more or less PUJA PAT centres. Islam is not a theology only. It is a way of life and covers all aspects of our life. The reading of translation of Quran to understand Allah’s directives to mankind should be given priority instead of simply Tilwat, Hifz and Qirat. The Madrasah concept on the pattern of Seminaries/ Dhramshalas should now be upgraded to full-fledged school with teaching and reading of Quran and its translation to promote education as a whole under one roof. Further the Masajid should cater to the needs of poor and hungry through food banks, Zakat payment to the needy, helping the sick and disabled with medicine and hospital expenses and promote child care centres, foster homes, senior homes, shelter homes for the homeless, nursing homes and advice and guidance to Muslims on various issues and family matters, etc. The Non-Muslims should also be invited to know about Islam through an Open House every month. In our Prophet’s time all such human activities and needs were channelized through Masajid and not through bureaucrats and their offices.
