The US State Department said Monday it remains concerned about the Egyptian government’s decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a “terrorist” movement, alongside the ongoing detentions and arrests in the country. “We are concerned about the interim Egyptian government’s December 25 terrorist designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as well as the ongoing detentions and arrests, including for peaceful demonstrators, civil society and political activists. We remain deeply concerned about all of the politically motivated arrests, detentions and charges in Egypt,” State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said on December 30 during a daily press briefing. Stating that these actions raise questions about the rule of law being applied impartially and equitably and do not move Egypt’s transition forward, Harf informed that Secretary of State John Kerry had reiterated these concerns during his last phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy on December 26.
