Uzbekistan has entered the active phase of preparing a feasibility study for the ambitious Trans-Afghan Railway Project, a major regional infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and boosting trade between Central and South Asia.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Termez Dialogue, Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade, ShokhrukhGulyamov said that field studies and technical assessments for the railway are already underway, marking a significant step forward in the project’s development.“We have already begun the active phase of preparing the feasibility study for this project,” Gulyamov said, expressing confidence that authorities would have concrete data and estimates by the end of the year. The findings will help determine the project’s next phase and provide a roadmap for implementation.

The proposed Railway is expected to link Central Asian nations with Pakistani seaports through Afghanistan, creating a shorter, faster, and more cost-effective trade corridor between the two regions. The railway is widely regarded as one of the most significant connectivity projects currently under consideration in Eurasia.

The railway could become part of a wider transportation network spanning Afghanistan and connecting major regional markets. Such a network would significantly improve transit efficiency and open new economic opportunities for landlocked countries in Central Asia.
