“Some people have been using and misusing Wakf properties. The current Wakf Act seems to fail in fulfilling the needs for which it was formed. Hence the government is planning to amend the Wakf Act to stop illegal occupation,” said Salman Khursheed, Minister of Minority Affairs, while addressing a conference held under the aegis of Tasweer-e-Hind Foundation in New Delhi on June 28. He hoped that if the amendment takes place, Wakf properties can neither be sold nor be gifted. He further said that earlier such properties were given for three years to schools and colleges, but now it will be given for 30 years.

Minority Affairs Ministry has also decided to hold consultations with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which recently raised objections against the government decision to register wakf properties.
