The Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2010, which seeks to amend the Wakf Act, 1995, is likely to be tabled in the coming Budget Session. Union Minister for Minority Affairs K. Rahman Khan told that the Bill has been sent to the Union Cabinet for approval after being revised to incorporate the majority of suggestions made by Parliament’s Select Committee and those made by the representatives of different Muslim organisations.

Mr. Khan claimed that he has included almost all the major suggestions made by the community leaders and groups like All India Muslim Personal Law Board. The Bill empowers the Central Wakf Council, currently an advisory body, to direct Wakf Boards to administer Wakf properties in each State. However, the proposal to appoint separate officers to look into the matters of Wakf has not been included in the Bill.
