Amnesty International US members and other activists will be meeting with their US Representatives and Senators to urge Congress to fully investigate the US government’s abuses in the ‘war on terror’ and hold accountable those responsible. Approximately 133 delegations will have more than 200 meetings across the nation. The in-district lobby week is part of Amnesty International’s 100 Days Action, a project to ensure that President Barack Obama takes concrete steps in his first 100 days in office to demonstrate commitment to human rights and the rule of law. They are demanding accountability for torture and other human rights abuses committed by the US government and contractors in the so-called ‘war on terror,’ said Johnson. Nine classified legal documents and opinions made public by the Obama Justice Department on March 2, revealed shocking information about the unlimited powers given to Bush after 9/11 attacks. Stricting civil liberties, carrying out unwarranted raids and detaining US citizens without prior warrant as well as ignoring Congress and international laws and treaties are some of them. The Bush administration sanctioned the use of aggressive interrogation techniques, including waterboarding and sleeping deprivation, against suspects.
