Authorities of the Aliah University, the only Muslim university in the state of West Bengal, are in a fix. Classes have been affected by the protest of students demanding the inclusion of the word ‘madrasa’ in the university’s nomenclature. With the Trinamool Congress supporting the students, the situation has taken a political twist. Samsul Alam, AU Vice-Chancellor, said, “I do not know what to do in this situation.” Referring to students’ protest on July 14, he said, “The matter could have been discussed. This is no way to place demands.” The name of the university was selected after a panel of nearly 50 eminent scholars agreed on it, he added.
He cited the example of Jamia Al-Azhar of Cairo which does not include the word madrasa. Leader of the Opposition, Parth Chatterjee, has demanded a motion against the police excesses on the students on July 14. Chatterjee also claimed that the Trinamool had brought up the matter several times in the Assembly but the government paid no heed. Mamata Banerjee condemned the police action. “The police should have been more restrained in their actions,” said Mamata.
