The Welfare Party of India protested vehemently against conducting surveys of Mosques and Madrasas by the Surat Police. The general secretary of the Welfare Party, Mr. Qasim Rasool Ilyas has said that by conducting such demeaning surveys it is only making the Muslim community vulnerable to suspicion and instilling a sense of fear in them. This move of the detailed surveys has caused anger in the Muslims living in Gujarat, who has already suffered a lot in and after the 2002 pogrom. Surat’s Police Commissioner Mr. Rakesh Asthana’s assertion that this is a normal survey and the Police officials are given special orders to behave with the people, is hard to believe. The Welfare Party considers it a malicious attack on the minority, which is something that cannot be tolerated.
