Some of the unfairand hypocritical policies of the government have made many people resort to the violence so as to protect their fundamental rights. The recent attack on the convoy of a political party in Madhya Pradesh is an evidence of it. People in some areas no longer believe in the government and that is why they try to get their rights on their own. In some places in North East and Jammu & Kashmir, the behavior of the Indian Army towards the citizens of India is like that of an invader towards his adversary. These are the views of Engineer MohdSaleem while addressing a public gathering on ‘Culture of Violence; Causes and Remedies’ at headquarters of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind in the national capital on 1 June.
The speaker raised a very important question when he said that the Naxals have caused more harm to the country than anyone else and still the government says they are their own people and they need to talk to them. This is a good attitude but why this soft corner not for Muslims who are implicated at regular frequency in the name of counter terrorism and so. He claimed that more than 1000 youths are still languishing in different jails for the crimes of others. The speaker asked had the attitude of media and government agencies been same if there had been a single Muslim among attackers of the political convoy.
Throwing light on the custodial killing of Khalid Mujahid on 18 May, Engineer Saleem, a well-known social activist and national secretary of JIH, said this was another form of violence done by the ruling party to suppress those who dare pull the curtain off the cosmetically improved face of the government. The speaker claimed, basing his point on the data available with him, that as many as 14000 custodial deaths have been recorded during the last 10 years and scores of the men in khaki responsible for these killings were either given bail or expecting the same in few days. He further said that in some cases the jail authority tried to show that it was not a custodial death but a case of suicide or an attack by the co-prisoners.
Er. Saleem stressed that whether it is a case of suicide or attack by jail inmates or something else, the jail authority is responsible to provide protection for the captives. Adding, these types of acts are impossible to be done without involvement or support of the ruling party. Clearing the stand of JIH, Mr. Saleem said the Jamaat is of the opinion that violence whether from the side of public or from the government is unjustifiable and it will not fetch any good to both public and government.
