Women’s organisations, student groups, and civil society members gathered at Jantar Mantar on Sunday to protest the bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. Authorities denied permission for a protest at India Gate, prompting organisers to assemble at the designated site under police watch.
Protesters described the bail order as a setback for justice and a threat to survivor safety. Speakers recalled a pattern of intimidation faced by the survivor’s family since the case began. They cited multiple incidents involving attacks and road mishaps targeting relatives and witnesses. Participants warned that release of a powerful convict risks renewed harm and discourages survivors from seeking justice.
Salim Engineer, Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, delivered a strong address. He termed the bail a grave injustice and alleged political pressure on institutions. He said the conviction followed detailed investigation and evidence. He expressed concern over moves by the UP government to seek closure of the case.
Gender rights activist Sudesh Goyat spoke with emotion and urged national solidarity with the survivor. She highlighted repeated attacks on the family and praised the survivor’s resilience.
Ritu Kaushik of the All India MahilaSanskritikSangathan said repeated bail orders in sexual violence cases erode trust and heighten insecurity. Protesters demanded immediate revocation of bail.
