In a move to contain the curse of dowry, Muslim scholars in Nalanda district of Bihar have decided not to conduct or/ and attend Nikah of those who give and take dowry. The decision, taken at a meeting of Imams in Nalanda district on 4 January, will surely heal the wounds of those who are dowry victims if implemented in letter and spirit as the number of dowry victims in the state is swelling rapidly. “We have decided not to perform Nikah on those who take and give dowry in the district,” said Qazi Mansur Alam, Nalanda district head of the Imarat Shari’ah of Bihar, adding, “It (the move) is a kind of social boycott of dowry takers.” The Qazi went on saying that after this decision is successfully implemented in Nalanda, the organisation would request Imams of other districts across Bihar to start similar campaigns.
