The Welfare Party of India is to set up its unit in Maharashtra in April this year. WPI vice-president Lalitha Naik said that the party has already extended its wing in eight states. It recently contested a by-election in West Bengal and was placed fourth in it. ”This shows our appeal is widening and we will work hard to make our presence felt in Maharashtra too,” she added. On being asked to whether WPI enjoys any backing from any religious group, SQR Ilyas, General Secretary of WPI clarified and said, “We are not guided by a single ideology and it is not a party of the Muslims alone.” Responding to a question whether small parties like WPI will cut into secular votes and strengthen “communal” parties, Ilyas said there was no secular party in the country. They all are opportunists and even the so-called secular parties played communal card whenever it suited them. “This new party will represent common man and give voice to the oppressed,” he added.
