The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Muhammad Salim Engineer, while addressing monthly press meet at JIH headquarters on 3 March expressed concern over the recent banking scams in the country like the PNB scam, Oriental Bank of Commerce scam, etc. and said that the Government has failed to deliver on its promise of clean and corruption-free governance. The Jamaat demands that a JPC be appointed to find out how a fraud of such magnitude and scale took place and what steps the Government had taken to ensure its prevention.

While strongly condemning the ongoing Syrian crisis, the Secretary General said the international community has so far remained mute spectator on the loss of life of the people especially children. He urged the Indian government to intervene and put pressure on other countries to help restore peace and bring the issue of Syria on the international stage. He demanded from the UN to play its role wherever innocent people are oppressed and are subjected to external aggression and injustice in the wake up of bombings and air strikes on the country.

The Jamaat leader also expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the country, growing incidents of lawlessness, crimes against women as well as the increase in number of extra-judicial killings or police encounters. The JIH Secretary General also said, “The tendency to resort to extra-judicial killings via police encounters in the quest to reduce crime is a dangerous trend and Jamaat feels that it is very harmful for democracy and civil liberties.”

In reply to a question during the monthly press briefing, JIH President Syed Jalaluddin Umari said we don’t believe in sharing dais with the Prime Minister just to show that Muslims are with the Government. “If we ever meet, we will meet on any issues and not just for the sake of sharing platforms.” He also questioned, in his reply to another question, by saying why the mainstream media has ignored the biggest protest ever by Muslim women against the Triple Talaq Bill and protecting Shariah in Rajasthan and many other places in the country.
