“The sky-rocketing prices of basic commodities are becoming the cause of worry for the common man. However by bringing in FDI and removing the subsidies from the earlier subsidised commodities the government seems to be more interested in fixing the US economic crunch rather than helping its own people,” said Engineer Saleem, at a monthly press meet organised by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on November 3. He also expressed concerns over the hint given by the new Union Minister for Railways about the rise in rail fare as he said it will hit the common man more dearly.

Addressing the issue of the growing communal violence in UP since the Samajwadi Party has come to power, Secretary-General of JIH, Mr. Nusrat Ali took a dig at the ludicrous and inept statement of the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who had said that riots are being waged in UP as a conspiracy to defame his government. “If this is the case then the responsibility of the government becomes more and it must do something in order to prove its credibility among the people rather than getting away by terming the riots as a conspiracy,” said Mr. Ali.

When asked about the recent meeting with Mulayam Singh Yadav, he lamented the fact that every meeting goes well and the authorities do give high hopes and assurances that they will do their part, however even after a long time the ground reality remains the same and no one takes any action. The Jamaat has also demanded that Rs. 20 lakh be given as compensation to each of the families of those killed in riots and the monetary loss of the devastated be fully compensated.

The issue of the illegal picking up of innocent Muslim youths always makes a mention in almost every press meet of JIH and this month’s press conference was no exception as the illegal picking up has continued unabated even after much hue and cry by justice-loving organisations from all across the country. The recent illegal picking up of 4 youths from Maharashtra surfaced in the discussion.

“Even after the court releases innocent youths and gives them clean chit, the intelligence agencies and police officials do not stop harassing the youth. They pressurise the person to become their informer and if he says no, then they threaten to again implicate him in other false cases,” said Mr. Ali. By creating the atmosphere of fear and insecurity, the anti-Muslim elements are trying to tear the fabric of social harmony in the country.
