Ravi Nair, Director South Asia Human Rights Organisation Centre, while speaking at the weekly meet organised by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind at its headquarters on 10 October said that we are an elected democracy but the need of the hour is to become an institutional democracy in order to serve the purpose.
Earlier, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, in his opening remarks, said that overtly and covertly people are being provoked against Muslims in particular and other minorities in general including Dalits. An atmosphere of hatred is being created against Muslims in a planned manner which is very dangerous.
The Jamaat leader also said if the successive governments had implemented policies for Muslims effectively then India would have been a better country with the help of Muslims. The Muslim community along with other minority communities and like-minded groups must continuously raise their voice against atrocities committed against anybody irrespective of their caste or religion. Efforts should be made to promote communal harmony and for that the Jamaat along with others is working at all levels.
Mr. Nair cautioned people against growing intolerance each passing day and warned that things could even go out of hand and beyond control if the evil designs of those spreading rumours and hatred are not curtailed or downplayed at the earliest. The Hindutva elements have been allowed to penetrate deep into the system and people with fascist ideology are encouraged to take up higher positions in the institutions run by the Government. He said the elected democracy has only to some extent served the purpose but the need of the hour is to practice institutional democracy.
He was of the opinion that rumours are designed in a way to create hatred and animosity within communities which is hampering the very plural ethos of our country. He said five more years for the BJP will be bane for the minorities. It is high time the people who are secular, and their numbers are very high, should be vigilant to downplay hatemongering and divisive agenda. He suggested to the audience to translate and share any useful information which is important and requires to be shared with the people elsewhere in order to inform them and educate them of what is happening around and how useful or dangerous it is for the welfare of the people and the country.
Towards the end, he asked the youth and younger generation to coordinate effectively to spread out the message useful for the community and the country. He asked them to develop better cooperation and coordination for the sake of their self, peace and prosperity of the community and the country. He reminded them to do everything by remaining within the framework of our Constitution and fight for injustice and intolerance.
