A delegation of the Girls Islamic Organisation of Goa (GIO), girls wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, visited the Raj Bhavan to present a memorandum to the Governor of Goa, Mrs Mridula Sinha.
Ms. Ambrin Baig, President of GIO, along with Ms Saniya Malik, Gazal Aga and accompanied by Mrs Shahida Khan, member  Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, met the Governor to acquaint her of the problems  faced by girls and  women due to the increased consumption of alcohol and drugs in Goa and the image of Goa as a sex tourist destination.
The GIO girls briefed the first citizen about the activities conducted by GIO over the years such as the campaign against female foeticide, awareness in schools against tobacco, environmental awareness campaign and respect and honouring elders and parents.
The memorandum addressed the current issue of girls being not allowed to wear the headscarf and full clothing for the AIPMT examination. It stated that such conditions deprive the girls of their freedom of choice of dress and moreover hinders their progress in the field of education. It said that the beauty of India is in the diversity of cultures and different traditions of dress and food.
Mrs Sinha stated that it was the right of every citizen to follow his or her religion without any restrictions. She appreciated the efforts of GIO and inspired the members of the organisation to work harder for the welfare of the society.
